The JEE shocks- Yet Again!

It was about year ago that I was analyzing what the cut-off for the 2010 JEE would be. Considering that paper was insanely tough, I had expected the cut off to go down from 179 in '09 ('09 JEE was very easy though...). Now, to my surprise, the cut off actually increased to 190. After spending a year at IIT-R, I gradually realised that there was a sort of saturation below the 250 mark line, which explains the unexpected ranks below that mark but marks higher than that corresponded to ranks which could be predicted as compared to the earlier year...

This year, though the paper was not as tough as last year, but a more balanced one, I had expected the cut off to remain the same. And the cut off increases by 40 odd marks to 229! Holy Hell! This was seriously unexpected. And I can't think of any explanations right now! Can you? Okay, I agree the paper was a bit easy on the IIT-JEE level, but come on, to get 200+, you need a different sort of attitude altogether!

Those who cleared this massive cut-off, congratulations mates! But those who couldn't, don't lose heart. It's not the end of the world! Just don't lose hope. And remember, "Success is not final, Failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts".

This leads me to conclude (the only feasible explanation) that the level of the students has increased exponentially! Although, after the new IITs were established, and the number of seats had increased significantly, it was said that getting into IITs had just become easier! It actually turns out to be quite different! With such cut-throat competition, the toughest competitive exam in the world just got tougher! So buckle up, IIT aspirants, you gotta utilise every millisecond now!

Shaumik, I don't agree the level of students has increased "exponentially". For your information, 36 marks were granted for free which you can subtract from the cut off marks which makes the cut off to 193. Comparing with last year's paper (I too had expected the cutoff to decrease in 2010), this year's paper was very easy and so the cutoff should have increased a lot but it has increased by only 3 (in 2010 it increased by 12, when paper was tougher as compared to 2009).
So, I would say that the level of students was better in 2010 than 2009 and 2011. I don't think there is a need for comparison between 2009 and 2011.

Absolutely correct.... Reason for increase in cutoff is due to mighty preparation of the students in general.

@Kapil- Oh, I forgot! leaving those 12 marks, it makes it 217! But even then, its quite high for my liking :/

36 marks werent given for free...12 marks were given...but it dint help much as 2 of the 3 qustions which were claimed to be incorrest were actually unclear and a lot of good students had already got them correct...the main reason was the reduction of negative marking in jee...many undeserving people gained from it but many good students dint as they spent time on the questions they knew instead of intelligent guessing...

Read my comment again. It is 36 marks you have to subtract, not 12 which makes it 193, not 217 which is not quite high considering the difficulty of the paper as in case of last year. I think IIT's have removed the page from the JEE website where this is written.

Controversies!
Last year, JEE did an evil thing called 'scaling' and now they give away marks for free! AWESOME!

JEE people have got mad, gone are the days when you had a perfect JEE paper and if you thought that a question was wrong then it was probably you who was wrong, i think the profs are trying too hard to change the pattern of jee.
