What happened to Amar Jyoti Kalita?

Let me refresh your memory. On July 9th, 2012, a girl was molested by a mob on G.S.Road, probably the busiest area in Guwahati. As if that was not enough, it was filmed by a reporter of a 'reputed' news channel, showing the faces of the people in the mob. The prime accused was Amar Jyoti Kalita, an employee of Amtron. Although this was a pretty straight forward case, it was made to look pretty complicated by the media. There were many side plots- the Chief Minister's office accidentally releasing the identity of the girl, the resignation of an NCW activist and the involvement, arrest and grant of bail to Gourab Jyoti Neog- a reporter of the aforementioned news channel!

It took a few days to arrest most of the people involved in the heinous act, that too because of the national attention- such is the efficiency of the Police. The prime accused, Mr Kalita, who likes to call himself James Bond, was on the run. The youth, meanwhile, got hold his Facebook account, where he had posted pictures of himself on the same night, wearing the same Adidas T shirt, which identified his remorseless face in the fateful video.

He finally surrendered on 23rd July- in Varanasi, thousands of kilometres from Guwahati- another fact pointing towards the ineffectiveness of the Police. Probably, it was due to the fear of the repercussions of being the most hated figure in the country! By this time, he had deactivated his Facebook account.

There were reports of him being unrepentant, saying that the girl was drunk- in his defense. He also denied friendship with Gourab Jyoti Neog. He was brought back to Guwahati and taken into Police custody.

The whole country was happy. And we went back to our own merry lives. No one bothered what happened afterwards.

Let me tell you the situation now. His profile is back online. He posted a new profile picture on Tuesday (23rd October 2012), which was two days ago. He is sitting in a red plastic chair, and he not only looks happy, but there is a look of evil in his eyes. He has a feeling that he can get away with anything! He still calls himself 'Bond'. What does this mean? He is free! In the best case, if at all he was charged, he got bail. Here is a link to his profile: https://www.facebook.com/amar.jyotikalita.7

Ironically, he writes in his profile- 'PROVIDE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ALL MEMBERS'- I wonder how he follows the constitution every single day.

I shouldn't criticize the law, but is it so easy to escape? Is it? And what about the media? Where are they now? Huh? Where? Someone please answer me. In fact if you do a custom Google search for stuff on Amar Jyoti Kalita after 1st September 2012, you don't get any concrete result.

UPDATE: All the accused in the act have been sentenced to two years in jail, and a puny fine of a few thousand bucks. Gourab Jyoti Neog, and two others have been released due to lack of evidence.

Next time you wonder what is so wrong with the country, read this goddamn post again. For your convenience, you can get to this post by going to bit.ly/the-great-indain-lie
